The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
