A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Sprinkling of Family-Friendly Preteen Love Story
In this animated journey for preteens, the fairy community focuses on collecting baby teeth of sleeping youngsters and placing gold beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He’s only slightly more interested in the financial workings of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who supply gold as payment. But Van’s curiosity grows when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the hideous gnome he had imagined.
A Forbidden Bond and Common Enemy
The stage is set for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of young love (though it’s perfectly appropriate for children). The fairy and goblin groups are estranged from each other, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to unite beings as one. Both groups as seen here are remarkably alike, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. The fairies are supposed to be self-centered sorts, given to taking whatever they fancy, while goblins are allegedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and backward, but are actually bright and technologically advanced.
Of course, this scenario requires a common enemy to join forces against, and this is duly provided by some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they serve as quite savage, if not particularly skilled, villains.
Target Audience and Final Thoughts
There aren’t all that many children’s animations targeting the kind of audience that is beginning to have first crushes, but are not old enough for whatever 14-year-olds view these days instead of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to become their new favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.
A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in Scottish cinemas from 10 October and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
